“I think assistive technology has to be more client-focused. It has to listen to what people with a disability want.”
For occupational therapist Jeremy, using bathroom aids has been a lifelong reality. These tools are another layer he must factor into his plans, creating challenges that many people might not consider, especially when travelling or staying away from home.
“It can be a bit hard at times to think ahead, especially staying over at friends’ places,” Jeremy says. “There can be a lot of environmental barriers.”
Historically, the design of existing shower chairs has done little to improve freedom of movement. Jeremy experienced this first-hand during a long overseas trip, which highlighted the limitations of conventional assistive aids.
“I travelled to the US for six months last year,” Jeremy explains. “Travelling on buses and trains, it was definitely challenging to manage a bulky shower chair with the rest of my luggage.”
With eight years of experience as an occupational therapist, Jeremy notes that the design of assistive aids has remained largely unchanged. This lack of innovation has left users with clunky, impractical options.
“Shower chairs have been quite basic in their approach,” Jeremy says. “And I haven’t seen change during the years I’ve been an OT.”
Given his unique dual perspective, we were keen to get his professional and personal opinion on the Oasis Chair. Its design is grounded in occupational therapy expertise, aiming to solve the very problems Jeremy has faced. His reaction confirmed that this chair is different.
“This product is really beautiful!” Jeremy says. “I like that you can move the armrests and the portability. Just being able to pull it apart and carry it with you. That’s a huge change.”
The Oasis portable shower chair represents a significant leap forward, offering a stylish, practical solution that empowers users with true independence and mobility.
