“One of the things that was very important for me physically was to find ways that I could feel confident”
Like many of us, Heather had never thought about a shower chair until she needed one.
While undergoing chemotherapy and recovering from surgery, she found trying to shower “…almost impossible,” Heather says. “Particularly because I was often feeling very weak and very vulnerable.”
“I didn’t think ahead about what I was going to need,” Heather says. “It didn’t occur to me how important it was going to be to feel safe.”
Heather found the clinical design of the shower chairs available brought her back to her time in hospital.
“They’re not a good reminder for people, and they’re not aesthetically pleasing, which is more important than you think, especially when you feel vulnerable,” Heather says.
Looking for an alternative option brought its own challenges.
“We ended up getting a stool which was totally inappropriate for my needs,” Heather says. “It was slippery, it was hard, it didn’t make me feel safe.”
For those finding themselves in a similar position, Heather offers this advice.
“Having a shower was one of the greatest things to look forward to. Cleansing, healing, and feeling warm were a very invigorating and important part of my day.”
“I’ve seen the Oasis chair,” Heather says. “It’s light, it’s transportable, it’s sturdy — I think the chair is absolutely beautiful.”
